Benefit for victim recovering from Dayton's Bluff beating

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

A benefit fundraiser and silent auction will be held Saturday, Oct. 5 for Ray Widstrand, the 27-year-old victim of a near-fatal gang beating on St. Paul's east side last August.

Widstrand was walking home on Aug. 4 when he came across a group of 30 to 40 young people who were fighting in the street. He was knocked down, beaten and stomped on. The mob even took off his pants to rifle through them.

The attack fueled outrage in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, and left Widstrand in critical condition with brain swelling that threatened his life.

Widstrand is currently recovering and in intensive therapy after multiple surgeries. All money raised at Saturday's event will go directly to Ray's Fund to help with his medical bills.
