Winter forecast has arrived

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's just what we've been waiting for. What to expect this winter here in the Midwest.

AccuWeather, as usual, has come out with their prediction as to how this winter season will play out.

They are forecasting above normal snowfall for the Midwest, including the Chicago area, along with shots of cold air at times. AccuWeather says an active storm track from the southwest will lead to the potential for significant icing in the central plains and southern plains along with a potential big snow storm for Chicago in late December and early January.

We all remember their prediction for the winter of 2011-12 calling for "snowmagedon" in the Chicago area due to La Nina. The result was a dismal 19.8" of snow making the 2011-12 winter season the 10th least snowiest on record and the 3rd warmest winter on record. Now in AccuWeather's defense, La Nina usually means a cold and snowier winter than normal for the Midwest, but that just didn't happen. There's always the other side of the coin.

In contrast, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center has predicted more of a normal winter season for the Midwest, including the Chicago area. It doesn't mean we WON'T have one decent snowstorm or two, but on average, near normal in terms of precipitation. It's always interesting to how this all plays out.
