Douglas Co. football players get skin infection

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. -

More than dozen Douglas County High football players are back on the field after being diagnosed with a contagious skin infection earlier week.

Principal Tim Scott credits the school's health teacher and an office secretary with discovering the outbreak among members of the football squad on Monday.

"We had a young man come to the office and he had a little spot," said Scott.

After 22 players were to their physicians to be checked out, doctors diagnosed about a dozen with mild case of the bacterial infection impetigo.  

"It's a fungus. Anywhere there's heat and moisture it can be transmitted," Scott said.

Doctors have cleared the players to return to school and the football field. Scott has reassured parents that school administrators have the situation under control.

"Our custodial staff, as well as our central office custodial staff, makes sure we have the hospital-grade disinfectants and fungicides to make sure we take care of the issue and we do a good job cleaning," Scott said.  "We wanted to really make sure, so we contacted the health department and had them work with us and follow all the guidelines and they certainly agreed that we were doing exactly what we needed to do to take care of our young people."

Scott stressed that this affected less than one percent of the student body and only impacted members of the football team.
