Government Shutdown Buzz Kill For Brewers

Posted: Updated:
SOMERDALE, N.J. -

The federal government shutdown proving to be quite a buzz kill for beer lovers at Flying Fish's tasting room.

"Ahh man! That's not fun," exclaimed Joe Brescia when he found out the shutdown could limit selections of craft brewers' suds.

The New Jersey brewery's  popular Exit series could be affected.

So could their new NJ 350. It's  beer commemorating New Jersey's 350th birthday. The plan is to release it in February.

Problem is the shutdown has closed the Alcohol & Tobacco Tax & Trade Bureau or TTB. It  approves new breweries as well as the recipes and labels Flying Fish will need for their new brews.

"If this doesn't get resolved soon we might not be able to do that," Flying Fish founder Gene Muller said about adding special ingredients to the commemorative beer. We might have to  rethink the  recipe so we have to keep our fingers crossed."

The owner of Funk Brewing company in Allentown took to Twitter venting his frustration at the hangover the government shutdown is creating. Approval for his already submitted federal licensing is on hold.

Timothy Patton is  in a similar boat. For three years he's dreamed of turning a  three story Kensington warehouse into Saint Benjamin Brewing Company.

Though he and his partner are paying the mortgage on it, they're now wondering if they'll be able to get  the federal licenses they'll need to open by December as planned.

"We thought the brewery was close to opening. This could push us back a month or
two. And we don't know how long it will take to work through backlog," said Patton.
