Tim Skubick: Levin, Stabenow blamed for Beretta backing out of Mich.

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

If you know anything about guns, you immediately recognize the brand name "Beretta."  The Maryland firm was being courted to move to Michigan.

Was.

Sen. Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge) is always up to something and in the midst of the anti-gun debate following one of the shootings at a school, he fired-off a letter to every gun maker he could think of suggesting that Michigan is gun-friendly and would welcome the companies to put a stake in the ground around here.

His letter to Beretta produced a firm, no thanks.

Seems the gun guys there have a litmus test.  "We consider first the consistency with which a given State has supported Second Amendment rights" and how many times has somebody sued the industry "in a misguided attempt to blame guns for criminal misconduct."

Too bad they weren't on the front lawn of the state capitol the other day with many pro-2nd amendment types showed up with their long guns, short guns, and in-between guns during what they call Open Carry Day at the capitol.

It was an unusual sight to see so much heat in clear view.  It was also a sight that some school tours decided to avoid.  Seven schools were slated to visit the capitol that day but when the state informed them they would share the grounds with several Uzis and shot guns, somehow, three schools decided to stay home.

Just like Beretta decided  "as a consequence of (our) analysis, we have decided not to consider your State…"

The analysis focused on how "federally-elected officials" had voted on "President Obama's efforts to restrict gun ownership by banning certain types of semiautomatic rifles and shotguns…"

Even though there are a host of pretty conservative gun-backers in the Michigan Congressional delegation, that was not good enough.

The company never named names, but Senator Jones did.  He laid the blame for losing Beretta at the hands of U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow.
