Child Killed, Grandmother Injured Walking to School

Posted: Updated:

(FOX/CNS) -  A 6-year-old boy was killed and his grandmother
seriously injured when they were struck by a pickup truck as the woman walked
the child and his 7-year-old sister to school today in Santa Ana.

The 48-year-old grandmother sustained a serious head injury and multiple
broken bones, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna and Orange
County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi. She was listed in critical
condition, Bertagna said.

A 17-year-old boy was behind the wheel of the vehicle that struck the
pedestrians about 7:40 a.m. at Central Avenue and Ramona Drive, Bertagna said.
The 7-year-old girl was not struck and escaped injury, according to Bertagna
and Concialdi.

The teenager was driving his 13-year-old brother to Douglas MacArthur
Fundamental Intermediate school before going to Segerstrom High School, where
the driver is a student, Bertagna said.

The teen driver was driving south on Ramona and turning east on to
Central when the pedestrians were struck, Bertagna said. The pedestrians were
crossing Central, he added.

A motorist who was behind the teen driver returned to the scene of the
collision to tell detectives the boy halted at a stop sign at the intersection,
Bertagna said.

"It appears to be an accident," Bertagna said.

The 17-year-old was cooperative and "very polite" with investigators,
Bertagna said.

"He's devastated by it," the corporal added.
