Pedestrian critically hurt, hit after stepping into roadway

MESA, Ariz. -

Mesa Police say a pedestrian stepped into the roadway and was hit by a minivan at Gilbert and Broadway Monday night.

Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato said they have indications the victim was highly intoxicated and stepped into the roadway. The victim, a Hispanic male in his 30s, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

The driver of the minivan was a woman in her 30s. She did not show any indications of impairment.

The area is closed while police investigate.

Also Monday night, two pedestrians were hit near 16th Street and Southern in Phoenix. They suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized.
