Man in custody after break-in at downtown Detroit Opera House

Posted: Updated:

Police say a person has been taken into custody by police at the Detroit Opera House following a break-in.
Police say just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday a man busted through an opera house door, shattering the glass. Police responded to the scene immediately and found a 46-year-old man from Fraser hiding behind the bar. He's believed to have been looking for the cash register, but since police found him first, he was arrested before he could steal a thing.

"That's awesome that people are watching and taking care of things that are valuable and vital to the community, so they captured this guy and he needs to learn a lesson," Dr.  Robert Zalensky, a fan of the opera, says.

"I'm actually a performer; I'm a dancer and a singer myself. This means a lot - the performing arts is essential for a city like this," says Rickey Eubanks.

Business owners are grateful for the speedy arrest as well.  Josh Guitar owns Detroit Beer Company across the street from the Opera House. He says when it comes to keeping the city safe, everyone has a role to play.

"It's important to have strong businesses next to each other," Guitar says. "A lot of people have moved back downtown, so even people just [look] out for each other on the streets."

Fox 2 went downtown to get video of the damage  but there was none - it is already cleaned up and all the doors have been barred shut.

Detroit Police say the suspect will be arraigned by Friday.
