Royal Oak 'Prop A' protest: Save our blood drives!

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Demonstrators protested outside a Royal Oak High School on Thursday against Proposal A, or the Human Rights Ordinance saying if the proposal passes, blood drives could be banned from city limits.

The ban was led by Dr. Fadwa Gillanders outside Shrine of the Little Flower High School. The school was hosting a blood drive inside.

Proposal A reads:

"An ordinance to amend the Code of the City of Royal Oak to prohibit discrimination based upon actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, height, weight, condition of pregnancy, marital status, physical or mental limitation, source of income, family responsibilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status, and to provide penalties for the violation thereof."

"I'm fighting for the fact that when you make a law adding 'HIV status' and wanting equal access to everybody - well there are certain people who cannot give blood. And now you are going to prevent blood drives from coming into the city limits of Royal Oak," Gillanders says.

This is the current screening process for a blood drive: If a man has had sex with another man he is considered high risk and cannot donate blood.

The pharmacist and her peers believe if the ordinance passes certain schools or businesses in Royal Oak could ban or refuse to hold a blood drive because it would violate the 'HIV status' portion of the human rights ordinance.  

"There have been bans across the country, universities banning blood drives, because they discriminate against a certain group of people who can't give blood," Gillanders explains. 29 communities in Michigan right now have adopted the human rights ordinance, but none have banned blood drives thus far.

In fact, the Red Cross and the American Association of Blood Banks are already asking the FDA to drop its lifetime deferral for men who have sex with another man. Bridget Tuohey, the communications manager for the Red Cross told Fox 2's Taryn Asher they feel the deferral is unwarranted.
