Motorcyclist arrested for allegedly pointing knife at driver

John McLaughlin John McLaughlin

A motorcyclist is behind bars, accused of pulling a knife on another driver who had his 6-year-old daughter in the backseat.

And police say this man has caused problems on Scottsdale roads before.

This motorcyclist was already on police radar. He might not have been caught had it not been for the quick thinking of the other driver and a police officer, whose ears perked up when he heard the suspect's description.

No one answered at John McLaughlin's apartment where he lives with his girlfriend. The 23-year-old motorcyclist is still in jail, accused of pulling a knife on another driver in Scottsdale around 1 p.m. Friday.

The other driver, who was in an SUV, told police he was going south on Scottsdale Road from Ashler Hills when the motorcyclist started tailgating him.

He says the motorcyclist pulled beside him and pointed a 6-inch knife at him, which prompted his 6-year-old daughter to start crying in the backseat.

The driver of the SUV says he was able to take a picture of a motorcyclist holding the knife. Then, he says, the suspect sped off.

The victim told police the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet with a red Mohawk. It caught the attention of an officer who recognized it from a previous incident.

In August, police say McLaughlin, wearing the same Mohawk helmet, fled from police after he was spotted going more than 100 miles per hour near Scottsdale and Happy Valley Road.

He was arrested a few days later while stopped in traffic.

Police say McLaughlin is also a suspect in a theft case where 4 checks were stolen from a Scottsdale home.

Police say when they arrested McLaughlin Friday in connection with the SUV incident, he admitted to pulling a knife on the driver, saying he wanted to slash his tires for cutting him off in traffic.

McLaughlin is facing aggravated assault charges. He's being held in jail without bond.

Prosecutors argued that he has a history of fleeing from police, doesn't have a job and fled from California to avoid probation there. He'll be back in court at the end of the week.
