Passengers frustrated by Spirit Airlines delays

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

It's been a nightmare travel experience for Spirit passengers. The airline decided to perform overnight security checks, causing delays across the country. A number of New York flights were affected by it.

After being delayed for hours, Spirit Airlines flight 180 finally arrived at LaGuardia Airport. Delays started yesterday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport. At least three flights coming into New York were affected. Some travelers waited 12 hours hoping to get a flight out.

At one point, police were called in to calm down frustrated passengers. Even if they wanted to leave, they couldn't get their bags. Many of them slept on the floor, beyond frustrated with the airline.

Last week, an engine failed on a Spirit plane after take-off from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Some smoke in the cabin resulted in an emergency landing.

Spirit Airlines sent out a statement: "Following the engine failure on one of our aircraft last week, and after reviewing routine maintenance procedures, we conducted a proactive and voluntary check on our aircraft engines overnight and today as a precautionary measure."

Spirit says all checks are complete, but passengers say it was beyond inconvenient.

Spirit expects to be back to a regular schedule later this evening. Passengers plan to follow up with the airline. They want to be reimbursed for all of the hours they waited.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.
