Clerk lives after cellphone stops bullet

Posted: Updated:

A gas station clerk is recovering after he was shot at a Hess station on West Colonial drive early this morning.

Around 4:30 a.m. a man walked into the store and displayed a revolver and demanded the clerk open the safe.  When the suspect was unable to open the safe after several attempts he fired a single round, striking the clerk near his chest. The clerk had a cellphone in his breast pocket of his shirt and the bullet hit his cellphone and not him.

He has minor injuries and was taken to Health Central hospital but he's expected to be OK.

Police are searching for a suspect who exited on foot.
