DECATUR, Ga. -

The man accused of killing his own grandmother made his first appearance in court on Friday.

Police say Marquis Freeman stabbed 75-year-old Shirley Kendrick to death inside her Decatur home on Tuesday.

Investigators said that family members tried to stop the 23-year-old, but they were unsuccessful.

The victim's grandson faces murder, aggravated assault and battery charges.

In court on Friday, Freeman referred to himself as "the real person." It was not clear what he meant.

A judge has not yet set bond in the case.

Freeman's next court date is scheduled for later this month.
