LAX Security: 'Will We Review Our Procedures?'

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

"If the TSA officer who was killed had a gun, would that have made a difference?" One of the questions being asked after the shooting rampage Friday at LAX. The suspect killed TSA officer Gerardo Hernandez, who was pre-checking boarding passes at Terminal 3 on the lower level of the airport. He then made his way, shooting, through the upper level x-ray check-in area, and as far as the gates before being shot by armed airport police.

"I doubt it" responds LAX airport chief Patrick Dannon, who adds he does not think an armed officer at the front door of the airport would have made a difference, either. "He walked in just like any other passenger with a bag" Dannon speaking about suspect Paul Anthony Ciancia.

Still, with calls for renewed security coming from as far up as Attorney General Eric Holder, measures at LAX are being reviewed. There are no plans to arm TSA agents, no more than ticket agents, or baggage handlers who might feel "just as vulnerable".

The chief defended his decision to keep armed officers roving throughout the terminal, rather than positioned next to check- in points, insisting he does not want his deployment to be predictable. It was roaming police that eventually shot the suspect at LAX.

"Will we review our procedures? Certainly? Will security look different next year? Possibly. But will it be predictable?" finished Chief Gannon.

(FOX 11) - Check-in stands at Terminal 3, where the deadly LAX shooting happened, were open for passengers to pick up belongings around 10 a.m. Saturday.   Many people left things behind during the emergency evacuation.

Around 1:30 p.m. terminal 3 was completely reopened to passengers and flights resumed in and out of that terminal.

Still 30 flights were expected to be canceled at LAX Saturday, as a result of the airport shutdown after Friday's shooting that took the life of one TSA agent and left several others injured.  Another 10 or more flights were expected to have delays.

The Executive Director of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) said that more than 85,000 travelers were affected by the cancellation of 850 flights Friday and hundreds of additional delayed flights.

LAWA police say there is increased security, more uniformed and undercover officers at LAX, they did not specify how long the additional police presence would last.

The FBI scheduled a press conference for 4pm Saturday, to give the latest details on the ongoing investigation into the shooting that shutdown one of the largest airports in the world.
