Law Firm Memo Creates Controversy

Posted: Updated:

A memo sent to female employees of a law firm has some people upset. There's nothing wrong with a little career advice, but this memo sent to women at the law firm Clifford Chance has hit a sensitive nerve. Some people are calling it sexist.

The five page guide is called "Presentation Tips for Women."

It was only sent to female attorneys at Clifford Chance's US offices.

In the document, there are 163 points about how to speak, how to act, and most importantly, how to dress.

Among them:

  1. "Your friends will still like you afterwards, even if you adopt a formal tone."
  2. "No one heard Hillary the day she showed cleavage."
  3. "Practice hard words."
  4. "Pretend you're in moot court, not the high school cafeteria"
  5. "Think Lauren Bacall, not Marilyn Monroe."
  6. "Don't giggle."
  7. "Wear a suit, not your party outfit."

The memo was leaked to blog site Above The Law.

The firm released a statement to them saying the guide was only a "personal perspective."

Any problems with it are entirely unintentional.
