Thief Steals Man's Wheelchair

Posted: Updated:

A man in a wheelchair becomes the victim of an unbelievable crime. FOX 29's Kelly Hessedal spoke to that victim.

The 45-year-old victim tells FOX 29 that he had been waiting to catch the trolley at 41st Street and Girard Avenue around midnight.

He was sitting on some steps with his wheelchair next to him when he says a man dressed in dark clothing grabbed his chair and took off.

The victim says he yelled at the man to give it back but says the man just laughed.

Neighbor Shirley Ross says she doesn't know what she would do if that happened to her. She also uses a wheelchair and says that getting around without her wheelchair would be impossible.

"I think it's sad someone would take something someone needs. I don't know what's wrong with people," Ross said. "I don't understand why people do this. What are you going to do with a wheelchair? You have no need for it; why take it?"

The victim, who's originally from the neighborhood where the robbery happened, says it was a football injury that left him disabled. The wheelchair is only valued at about $200, but it's money he says he doesn't have.

Ross says she understands. To scrape together the money to put a chair lift in her house, she says, took a year and a half.

"Just bring his chair back. Please bring his chair back because they are hard to come by, especially when you have no money," Ross said.
