McAuliffe promises bipartisanship as governor

Posted: Updated:

Gov-elect Terry McAuliffe is striking a bipartisan chord following his narrow Democratic win over Republican Ken Cuccinelli.

McAuliffe phoned Republican lawmakers Wednesday to talk about ways he can work with them once he takes office in January. He said voters are looking for bipartisanship over showmanship.

The former Democratic National Committee chairman told an afternoon news conference that he spent the morning calling Republican legislators to sound them out on ideas, and to start building relationships.

McAuliffe prevailed over Cuccinelli in a campaign that was driven by negative advertising, accusations of dodgy dealings and a tea party-backed nominee who tested the limits of swing-voting in Virginia.
