LOWER TOWNSHIP, N.J. -

A home explodes in a South Jersey neighborhood, but instead of running away from the burning debris neighbors ran towards it and saved two lives.

The fire chief says in more than a decade on the job. He's never seen a home explode like this then burst into flames. The couple who was inside after is recovering at the hospital after neighbors came to their rescue.

The smoke was still smoldering and only a portion of the front wall was still standing after fire officials say a Villas, New Jersey home exploded with an elderly couple inside.

Ashley Adamson and her husband Stanley felt the blast from a block away.

Stanley's coast guard training kicked in. He raced into harm's way to pull the woman out after he says the roof collapsed around her.

"The only thing I had to do was toss a couple of boards out of the way pull out some insulation black smoke it got really intense .I just pulled her out," Stanley Adamson said.

He says as another group of neighbors pulled the woman's husband to safety flames engulfed the home in the 200 block of East Atlantic.

50 firemen from 6 different companies called in to battle the blaze. Residents temporarily asked to leave the area.

"The evacuation was precautionary obviously because of the size and magnitude of the explosion. The house was destroyed," Villas Fire Company Chief Rich Harron said.

First Responders are unaware of what caused it. Police confirm new gas lines are being laid in the neighborhood. Whether that played a role in the explosion will be investigated.

After seeing windows and doors blown across the street and the couple's Home annihilated, Stanley just thankful he was able to pull the couple to safety.

"They were in so much shock they were like" my house!" But they have their lives too we got them out of there," Stanley said.

Only one other neighboring home was damaged by heat and debris. The investigation into what happened will start Friday morning. ATF has been called in to help.
