Schools In Five States Extending School Day

Posted: Updated:

Could a longer school day be in the works for your child? Five states across the country are trying something new.

A number of schools in Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Tennessee are trying a longer school day. It's all part of the time act, which provides grants to schools in high-poverty areas.

The schools are adding 100 minutes so just over an hour an a half of classes to the end of the school day, but, this time isn't for reading, writing, and arithmetic.

The schools are offering different classes, like technology, foreign language, and even scrap-booking and the kids like it because in a lot of cases, they can pick which class they want to take.

The schools are also going a bit easier on teachers, since they're in school longer too.

The districts are cutting back on meetings, but most teachers say they're happy about the enrichment programs.
