NYPD: Thieves still really love Apple Inc. devices

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Apple fanatic Whitney just replaced her iPhone 5. When we asked her about, if you didn't know any better, you might think she was talking about a family member; she said it's her everything.

She is not the only New Yorker who feels this way.

That is perhaps why it's so troubling, the NYPD says, that Apple products are among the biggest targets for thieves.

The NYPD says that in 2012, nearly 20 percent of all burglaries, robberies and grand larcenies involved apple products. In total almost 16,000 apple items were stolen. That is 14 percent of all the crime in the city.

Bob Strang, a former FBI and DEA agent, is now CEO of Investigative Management Group. He said the items have a high resell value. He said these Apple thefts are not petty crimes: the criminals have a network.

While Strang wants the criminals off the streets before they steal, the City Council is currently debating a measure that would force pawn shops and resellers to share their inventory with police through a digital database -- a way to take a bite out of crime that apple devotees seem to be on board with.

Burger chain Five Guys is testing the adage that everything tastes better with bacon. It is rolling out a customizable milkshake program and along with bananas, peanut butter, Oreo cookies, salted caramel, you can chose bacon.  Yes that's right: a bacon milkshake.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan gathered religious and city leaders with the focus of how to ease tensions between police and the community in advance of this Saturday's march to protest the death of Eric Garner. Some of the leaders in this group are rarely photographed together, let alone seated at the same table. But they were brought together over concerns about possible protest violence by the cardinal, one of the most powerful figures in the city and who commands respect across the board.

Pull out your smartphone on any given day, tap on Instagram and you'll find a lot of selfies. But while the rest of us clog our feeds with our best pouty faces, a group of photographers scales and then hangs off bridges and buildings in a contest to produce the most daring photograph in New York City.
