Ventra users roll through CTA turnstyles with negative balances

In the latest Ventra problem, CTA customers are rolling through turnstiles despite having negative balances on their Ventra cards.

CTA spokesperson Tammy Chase says that Cubic Transportation Systems, the Ventra operator, assumes all risk for any customer with a negative balance.

"The reason Cubic allowed negative balances to accumulate was that during the period in which customers experienced difficulties Ventra readers, Cubic implemented a short-term policy that allowed customers a grace period in order to ease boarding trains and buses," Chase explains. "With software upgrades that have successfully improve rail reader performance and now being made to CTA buses, this policy is no longer necessary."

Under contract, Chicago's Transit Authority gets paid by Cubic no matter how much or how little a Ventra card has on it. Once the turnstile approves a rider, Cubic is charged and the CTA gets paid.

Chase tells FOX 32 that Cubic is actively working to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
