Woman Shot When Gun Discharges On SEPTA El Platform

PHILADELPHIA -

A local woman on her way to see "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" finds real-life drama on a subway platform.

Instead of the movies, she ended up in the hospital after a gun mishap right next to her.

This happened at 3:17 p.m. on the Market-Frankford Line platform at 40th and Market streets.

FOX 29's Omari Fleming reported live Friday night from Southwest Detectives that the man whose gun went off on the SEPTA El platform is cooperating with police. He's a security guard, and he also called to turn himself in when he saw himself on television.

In the SEPTA surveillance video you see 22-year-old Shirley Williams jump up from the bench, then touch her arm and face where she was shot while waiting for the El at 40th and market.

Police believe the shooting is likely an accident. They say it happened while the man next to her, now identified as a security guard, was rummaging through his bag.

You can see the two jump at the same time when the gun inside the bag goes off.

Investigators say the bullet ricocheted off the bench and wall then went through a trash can wounding Williams.

Because of the screeching trains, police believe the man may not have known what happened.

"He may not have realized he discharged a weapon because of the noise down in that environment," police Lt. John Walker said.

The security guard calmly walked away boarding a train.

The man was seen getting on an eastbound train, and for some time after the incident, police were stopping trains along Market Street in Old City as they searched for him.

But after seeing this video on TV, the 21-year-old security guard called in, police say. We're told they picked him up at a home in West Philly.

There was no immediate word Friday night on whether that security guard will face any charges. We've learned that the woman who was wounded was released from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday night.

We've also learned that she was on her way to take in a movie with a family member from West Philadelphia, Fleming reported.
