Braves move could impact local hotels

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta economic leaders fear that the Braves planned move to Cobb County will impact local hotels.

According to Ron Fennel of the Atlanta Hotel Council, Braves fans purchase about 110,000 hotel nights each year. Fennel estimates about 90 percent of those are downtown or near airport parking lots.

Atlanta City Councilmember Michael Bond is spearheading an effort to persuade the team not to move to Cobb County.

"The hotel and tourism industry to Atlanta is like Wall Street in the financial industry to New York," Bond said. "Tourism is our bread and butter here. About 32 percent of all of the Braves ticket sales currently are hotel packages."

Bond  said that the tourism industry will lose jobs if the team makes move up I-75.
