Woman found dead during 'suspicious' apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have released the name of a woman who was killed in an early morning apartment fire.

45-year-old Teresa Parkmon was pulled from the apartment by Phoenix  firefighters, but did not survive.

Crews were called to the apartment complex near Southern and 11th Avenue around 3 a.m. Monday.  When they arrived at the scene, they found the corner unit engulfed in flames.

"I was asleep and my daughter came screaming.  She thought the fire was in our apartment," said a resident.

Neighbors reported a large amount of smoke coming from the two story unit, unaware anyone was inside.

"This is a real quiet area right there.  I didn't see nobody out there, so I didn't think nobody live there," said Jeraun Clark.

The Phoenix Fire Department confirms crews found the victim upstairs.  She was later rushed to a local burn center in critical condition, but died later as a result of her injuries.

"When they found the victim, they did notice that she had burns to her body.  She was not responding," said Phoenix Fire Capt. Reuben Saavedra.

By mid-morning, investigators from the Phoenix Fire and Police Departments were collecting evidence from inside the apartment in an effort to determine exactly what caused this fire.

"Any time we have any type of victim in a fire, we always have to incorporate police along with our fire investigators, that way they can determine exactly what happened to the victim," said Saavedra.

According to investigators, the upstairs portion of the apartment was filled with smoke, not flames -- part of the reason they are looking into what caused this deadly fire.

One Phoenix firefighter hurt his arm while battling the blaze.  He is expected to be okay.
