St. Mary's Food Bank down 2,500 turkeys from last year

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of  people showed up to pick up donated food for Thanksgiving, but it's not enough!

A valley food bank says this past weekend's rain storm took a toll on their donations and as of Monday night, they won't have enough for needy families.

It's all about supply and demand.

It rained on some of their busiest donations days, meaning fewer people showed up. And now people are lining up in droves to get turkeys.

A spokesperson says they'll make sure everyone gets food for the holidays although they can't guarantee everyone will get turkey.

"We were trying to get a food box," said Chrystal Hunt-Hutchison.

But instead, Chyrstal was turned away from St. Mary's Food Bank at 31st Avenue and Thomas Monday afternoon.

"The security guard just told us they're not giving out any more turkeys.. they're closed," she said.

She was told to come back Tuesday.  That's because earlier Monday, the food bank was inundated with people in need.  Six lanes of cars filed into the food bank and thousands of turkeys were already handed out.

"We processed 2,500 families since 9:00 today, so at 2:30, we had put out as much food as we could safely put out in a day, so we had to close the doors a little bit early," said Jerry Brown, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance spokesman.

While they weren't handing out food, the food bank was still taking donations late Monday afternoon.

"What a tremendous donation.. everything you need here.. she has pies, turkeys, rolls," said Brown.

Brown says rain slowed donations this past week.  With two days left to give out food, they're still in need of 2,500 turkeys.

"We will have enough food for everybody.  We will make sure there is food for everybody.  I can't promise we'll have turkeys that long," he said.

Hutchison hopes to get a turkey when the food bank opens Tuesday.

"It is very important.  It's not more for me as much as it is for my grandchildren, you never know what you need.. you're fulfilling for somebody else," she said.
