Walk on Challenge: 5th graders fight childhood obesity

PHOENIX -

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona is awarding students for living a healthy lifestyle.

The Walk on Challenge starts next February, but students at one elementary school in the Paradise Valley School District are already warming up.

Students at Campo Bello Elementary aren't afraid to break a sweat.

"Jump rope, basketball, pretty much everything that is active," said Dylan Cordso, a student.

Over 100 5th graders are getting ready to take on the Walk on Challenge to help fight childhood obesity.

"It's very important to teach children that fruit and vegetables are delicious and good for them and sweet drinks have empty calories.. physical exercise is very important," said Cheryl Abraham, a teacher.

Abraham is the school intervention specialist and a 5th grader teacher.  She's been coordinating the event for several years.

During the month of February, 5th graders here and state-wide are encouraged to get moving and get healthy.

"Running helps me get out my stress when I'm really angry," said Destiny Boyle, a student.

Not only are the kids learning how to live a healthier lifestyle, the school benefits as well.  Campo Bello received a $5,000 grant two years ago for 100 percent participation and installed a walking track as a result.

"We'd like to win that grant again too. $5,000 is a lot of money.  We'd like to add stations with the next grant we get," said Abraham.

Getting fit is fun and educational.  For the kids, the hardest part is getting all 5th graders to participate, but with a little motivation, they'll all take on the Walk on Challenge in a few months.
