'Meals on wheels' is out in full force

The Post Office might have been closed on Thanksgiving but important deliveries were still being made.

Carolyn Martinez spent Thanksgiving carrying meals to elderly residents on the Lower East Side for people who were unable to leave their homes because they're too ill or too frail or possibly unable to cook.

It's part of the city's Meals On Wheels program ensuring no senior is without a meal this holiday, especially those who are shut in.

Carolyn Martinez a volunteer for Meals on Wheels said there are a lot of elderly and disabled people with no one to cook for them. “They have nobody to cook for them, to do for them,” she said. “They're sick, they're old.”

Carolyn says she enjoys her role as a food ‘foot soldier’ on the front line of taking care if NYC's seniors

She's been doing this for 14 years.

“I know that my people need their food,” she said. “They need their meals. They're waiting so I don't wanna let them down. So I just keep motivated. I know I have to be there."

Typically Meals on Wheels involves a vehicle. But Carolyn is on foot. Call it Meals on Heels if you like but she pounds the pavement day in and day out feeding 60 clients a day.

Meals on Wheels ensure that at least 20,000 NYC home-bound seniors will get fed on Thanksgiving and the other 364 days of the year.

"These are ppl who don't get out if their homes enough,” said Rachel Sherrow, another volunteer. “Maybe they don't have people to talk to or see and we're there for them every day. So it's a good feeling."

    Diner chain Denny's is opening it's first New York City location, complete with a big-city "deal".   How does a $300 breakfast sound?    The Denny's is located at the corner of Nassau and Spruce in Lower Manhattan's Financial District.  Along with its normal food you can get at just about any location in the rest of the country, this location will offer a Grand Slam breakfast with a bottle of 2003 Dom Perignon champagne.
