Fire hydrant auction raises money for fallen police, firefighters

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A special auction held Wednesday night raised money for fallen Chicago police and firefighters. Up for bid: fire hydrants that have been on display around the city for the past few months.

The bidding began with an asking price of $500 for the first hydrant and as the night went on, the war of wallets escalated. In one case, a hydrant sponsored by rock legend Sammy Hagar went for $5,000.

In the last 13 months, Chicago has lost three firefighters in the line of duty. The auction hopes to raise thousands to benefit the 100 Club.

"They're there at the worst times of our lives, we usually respond to people who need us, and the 100 Club responds to when we need them. And I cannot thank them enough," Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said.

Videos paid tribute to the heroic police and firefighters who put their lives on the line every day.

All told there are 101 hydrants being auctioned off, representing each of the firehouses in Chicago.

Local artist Chris Campagna designed one. He is living proof of the danger and importance of the job first responders do.

"When I was ten years old I was burnt over 90 percent of my body," Campagna explained. "A fireman saved my life, all I remember was a big, giant monstrosity of a fireman saying you're not going to die on my watch, I didn't die on his watch."

23 hydrants were part of Wednesday night's live auction. The rest will be sold through an on line silent auction starting tomorrow through Sunday night.

The CEO of the 100 Club was serious about their mission, but smiled as he encouraged bidders.

"I think these fire hydrants make great Christmas presents and Hanukah presents," said Joe Ahern. "They'd be lovely in your home, out in front of your house. So I hope you bid high."

If you are interested in buying a remaining hydrant, you can participate in the online auction that runs until Sunday, December 8th at 8 p.m.
