EMU off-campus security addressed after another student shot

(WJBK) -

Destinee Leapheart told Fox 2 Tuesday night she was awakened to a popping noise earlier that morning. She had been struck in the shoulder by a stray bullet that traveled through her bedroom wall. She was treated at a hospital.

Destinee is the latest victim in a string of EMU students affected by off-campus violence. EMU football player Demarius Reed was murdered in his off-campus apartment building during what police call a robbery gone wrong, and Julia Niswender was murdered more than a year earlier in the same apartment building where Destinee was shot, the Peninsular Place complex.

One resident there tells Fox 2's Ron Savage she is scared and feels uncomfortable living there. Another says he will not be renewing his lease in August. Savage also reports the complex now offers on-site courtesy officers. One officer patrols from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Peninsular Place is just off campus, but the Eastern Michigan University Department of Public Safety and Washtenaw County deputies are now patrolling this neighborhood.

"This is a collaborative effort between Eastern Michigan University, the city of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County and Ypsilanti Township to increase the patrols north of campus in that Leforge area in the Peninsular Place apartment area. This is recognition of the many students, and Ypsilanti residents that live there," says university spokesman Geoff Larcom.
