Vigil Held For Market Street Building Collapse

PHILADELPHIA -

Today marks six months since a deadly building collapse in Center City killed six people, and hurt more than a dozen more. Last night, community members held a vigil to remember the victims.

It was six months ago that the building on Market Street collapsed onto a thrift store next door.

Last night, community leaders held an interfaith community prayer service at the First Presbyterian Church in Center City.

After the service, there was a candlelight procession to the scene at 22nd and Market Streets.

Since the collapse and subsequent investigation, officials have held two people responsible for the building collapse.

Demolition contractor Griffin Campbell is charged with third degree murder.

He surrendered to police last week.

Investigators say that it was Campbell who decided on the "method of demolition," which ultimately led to the catastrophe.

Also, the excavator operator, Sean Benschop, also known as Kary Roberts, was also charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter.

Last week, we also heard from one of the victims who was trapped under the rubble for 13 hours.

52-year-old Mariya Plekan lost half her body in the accident, and is confined to a wheelchair.

She's made a DVD of her deposition for a legal claim, against the Salvation Army, the contractor, and others linked to the collapse.

Plekan says that if she had known it was dangerous to go inside the Salvation Army store that day, she wouldn't have gone near it.
