Brooklyn Park couple welcomes set of identical triplets

BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. (KMSP) -

The old cliché is three's a crowd, but doctors say it's a special rarity to have identical triplets -- and one Brooklyn Park, Minn., family is welcoming their own naturally conceived set.

Some say the odds are 1 in 100 million. Others say it's more like 1 in 200 million, but it's even more of a miracle when you consider no fertility treatments were involved.

The father of the Hanson triplets told Fox 9 News words can't describe the feeling of hearing those odds.

"This is Brooklyn, and when she was born she was 2 pounds 14 ounces; this is Zoey, 2 pounds 6 ounces; and this is Mackenzie over here, and she was 2 pounds 12 ounces," Kayla Hanson said.

The trio was born five months ago, and they are thriving now. Their parents, on the other hand…

"It's crazy. They are bundles of joy, so they make you smile, and there are times you want to pull your hair out," Kayla Hanson conceded.

The triplets arrived 10 weeks early and spent 6 weeks in the hospital before they came home.

"It's a big shock of trying to figure out how you are going to, let alone, raise one kid," Adam Hanson said. "Now, it's 3 -- so it's 3 times the fun now!"

Although they may appear identical, their parents say the girls are very different.

"One of them has the feisty personality. She knows how to get exactly what she wants. One is just very laid back, and she just goes with the flow," Kayla Hanson said. "The other one is kind of like her dad, likes to be the social butterfly, and be involved in everything."

The key to handling all three at once is having plenty of diapers on hand, keeping the kids in a routine, and hope that everyone cooperates when it comes time to eat.

"I try to feed all three at the same time," Kayla Hanson explained. "You do two at once, and when one wants a break, you switch and keep going back and lots of crying in between there."

All in all, the Hansons say it's going pretty well. If they had children before, they might feel a little overwhelmed, but since they don't know any different, they're just enjoying building their family.
