The Chief of Inkster Police has been asking for help for his city for a long time and now it's finally here.

"This should double the patrol efforts out here," Chief Hilton Napoleon said, in nearly sub-zero temperatures Tuesday, but the sun was shining on Inkster.

The chief from the crime-plagued city announced a new initiative with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department and Michigan State Police. It's a massive effort to reduce crime and increase visibility, exactly what residents have been calling for.

The program is called SCOUT for Sheriff's Community Organized Urban Team. Officers will team up with neighborhood watch groups and block clubs, a program that's been successful in Detroit, Rosedale Park and Dearborn. Inkster police will employ a mobile command unit and more boots on the ground.

"We have approximately 45 auxiliary officers here, and they're going to be involved in this initiative as well as the sheriff's reserve," Napoleon said.

Though Chief Napoleon says overall violent crime is down there have been some particularly violent months, violent crime up 15 percent in November alone. Homicides are up, too - already 14 for the year in a city of only 25,000. Still the chief says despite Inkster's significant police cuts, this will be a new beginning.

"What this is really all about is police agencies working together to make Inkster safe."
