Man dies in mysterious single-vehicle crash

Posted: Updated: Dec 18, 2013 06:14 PM

A man was found dead after he was ejected from his car during a single-vehicle rollover crash on Wednesday morning.

Phoenix police spokesman James Holmes says residents heard a crash around 2:45 a.m., but no one went outside to check out what happened.   It wasn't until 5 a.m. that a resident went outside and saw a car rolled over and a body laying in a residential street near 47th Avenue and Greenway.

Holmes says a man was thrown from a car during a single-vehicle crash. He was declared dead at the scene.

The victim was identified as 28-year-old Benjamin Caleb Smith.

Police are calling the crash a big mystery because there is substantial damage to the car, but they don't know what caused it.   Holmes says so far, they've been able to determine that the man veered, lost control and hit a mailbox and tree stump.  That may have caused the car to rollover and eject him, but officers are still figuring out the car's path to find out what happened.

Holmes says it's too early to tell if impairment was a factor.

Authorities say there were no skid marks for investigators to determine the speed of the car when it crashed.
