MONTAUK, N.Y. (AP) - The Coast Guard has stepped in to help the crew of a commercial fishing boat after its engine compartment started flooding 26 miles from Montauk Point.

The Caitlin & Mairead was being towed back to Montauk Thursday.

The Coast Guard says the 26-foot boat started taking on water around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the four people aboard initially were able to pump it out. But by 5:30 p.m., they couldn't keep up with the flooding, and the vessel lost power.

The Coast Guard's Montauk station and Cape Cod air station responded with more pumps and got the water out. No one was injured.

The Coast Guard notes that the crew was prepared with survival gear.

The boat's owner didn't immediately respond to a message Thursday at his Montauk home.
