Man fights homeowners association over metal door

MORROW, Ga. -

A Clayton County man is locked in a battle with his homeowners' association that he says is putting his safety at risk.

Mathew Goodson tells FOX 5 News that when someone tried to break into his home, they couldn't thanks to his metal security door, but despite how effective they are, his HOA says they are not approved for his home. Now the battle may be taken to court.

After years of prying open glass storm doors and metal security doors, the retired firefighters is convinced that metal doors are more secure.

"The burglar bar door is hard to open because you have to pry ‘em, pull on ‘em. They are not just easy 'pop' cause they got deadbolts on them stuff like that," said Goodson.

He said a failed break in at his Morrow home nearly two weeks ago proves metal doors provide better security.

"They punched a hole in the screen and pushed the screen up. Then they tried to reach in here to unlock the door," said Goodson.

But the prowler was unable to open the metal door.

"To me those burglar bars saved my life," said Goodson.

This is why Goodson is fighting his homeowners association. The HOA covenant doesn't allow burglar bars and the HOA has fined Goodson, who refuses to remove the doors, $100 a week.

"I had some people come by and talk to me. I have some people say they will go along with me if I decide to get a lawyer," said Goodson.

The HOA sent a response to FOX 5's inquiries regarding the Goodson's case. They state "Nothing can be changed, the door must be removed. It cannot and will not be approved."

"If nothing happens in a week or two I'm going to start getting a lawyer and get things situated and go to court," said Goodson.

Several viewers weighed at facebook.com/FOX5Atlanta about this story when the story first aired. Most took the side of Goodson. He said he was encouraged by that support.
