Lincoln home decked out for Christmas, but no tree

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Abraham Lincoln's home in Springfield has been decorated for Christmas in much the same way as it would have been in his day, but there's no tree and no Santa Claus.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site curator Susan Haake explains that the Lincolns would have had much simpler decorations.

She tells The (Springfield) State Journal-Register that there's no evidence they had a tree, though the nearby First Presbyterian Church had one and invited people to come see it.

And the more contemporary image of Santa as a fat and jolly elf didn't solidify until after the Civil War.

But mantels in the home have been draped with evergreen garlands, cranberry ropes and holly.

The Lincoln Home is open daily for tours except Christmas and New Year's Day.
