How to keep your furnace, roof and pipes working in these frigid temps

The snow started Saturday and tapered after dumping as much as 18.7 inches in places around Michigan. It's being followed by temperatures plunging into the negative teens and 20s for a couple of days.

Follow these tips to keep your house in working condition during the frigid temperatures.

Keith Carter from Mechanical Heating and Cooling shares a few tips to keep your furnace working properly in these frigid temperatures.

+ Make sure the air filter is clean
+ If you have a high efficient furnace with termination pipes make sure snow does not block them or that they have frozen
+ Also check exhaust and intake vents

REMEMBER: If you are using a space heater do not let it run overnight and do not leave it unattended.

Arnie Goodman from American Standard Roofing has some maintenance tips that can save you money in the long run.

"There's a lot of things that you want to watch for. Snow build-up on a roof is tough, okay, but it's the ice that really, really can hurt you," he says.

"Gutters are metal. They're going to freeze first, and then the ice builds its way up the roof," says Goodman. "When that ice builds up it gets underneath the shingles and when it melts it can leak."

+ Buy a roof rake to clear off the snow
+ Check soffit vents in the attic to be sure they are not covered by insulation
+ Check that your bathroom fan is vented outside the attic

REMEMBER: Conditions are too dangerous to get up on a ladder to clear off your roof with a broom or a shovel.

Dylan Gabor from Plumb-O-Matic has seen his fair share of plumbing problems during the cold season.

He says most pipe problems happen in an area that is not heated, so if you have a heated basement you should be in the clear unless your pipes are in a room that does not include a heating vent.

+ Spray foam insulator near the cracks or doors where a cool draft is coming into the pipe area
+ You can also buy insulation made specifically for piping
+ Allow the water to trickle at times
