Gilbert family home after being stranded in Illinois for a week

Posted: Updated:

Blizzards, icy runways and temperatures so cold airline workers couldn't do their jobs all these factors coming into play right as people are trying to come home for the holidays.

FOX 10 caught up with a family from Gilbert who finally got home tonight a week late.

Getting off the ground has never felt so good to the tens of thousands of passengers stranded due to winter weather.

"We were gonna leave Thursday, then Monday, then this morning, a couple different snow storms freezing cold weather and we finally made it home" said TJ & Donna Wilcoxson.

Donna Wilcoxson took her husband TJ and kids Alexana and Jackson to her hometown of Darien, Illinois for Christmas.  They were supposed to come home to Gilbert last week but the weather had another plan.

"When the first flight got cancelled we immediately starting calling the airline and it took us about 3 hours to get through. We had a busy signal the whole time" said TJ.

The family stayed inside Grandma & Grandpa's house when the polar vortex brought on a wind chill of 41 below zero. School resumed Monday back home so Jackson and Alexana had plenty of homework to keep them busy.

"My teachers had to e-mail my work to me so I could make it up" said 5th grader Jackson Wilcoxson.

His sister Alexana Wilcoxson in 7th grade also kept up on her work, "I got some work done but it's gonna be really hard this weekend."

Tomorrow they'll head back to school and work but tonight this family plans to enjoy the warm weather.

"We're going home, gonna unpack, probably jump in the pool"
