Why police chased a suspect 12 miles down 35W

BLAINE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A 12-mile, high-speed chase down Interstate 35W came to an end Wednesday afternoon in a quiet Blaine, Minn. neighborhood, but not before suspect driver Michael Wilson slammed head-on into a pickup truck carrying a man and his young son.

"All of a sudden there was a car coming down at me 70 mph," said Jeff, the innocent driver. "I didn't care about the car or me so much just thinking about my son the whole time. It was scary."

Police said the chase started when someone called to report an erratic driver, with a physical altercation going on inside the pickup truck.

When a trooper tried pulling over Wilson, he didn't stop. It turns out the pickup was stolen from a Fridley, Minn. home on Monday.

The owner of the stolen pickup, who did not want to be identified, learned Wednesday that it was his truck used in the high-speed chase. When you look at the video, it's a miracle no one was hurt.

"We had a domestic violence situation," State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said. "It would be similar to getting a call for domestic violence situation in a house and choosing not to act. Someone was being harmed and the driving behavior on part of the fleeing driver was putting others at risk…Ceasing a pursuit doesn't mean it ends the threat to the public or the likelihood it's not going to happen again."

Wilson was charged Friday with first-degree burglary and two counts of fleeing police.

This is not the first time Michael Wilson has taken off from police. His long rap sheet includes fleeing police, drugs, burglary and theft.
