No pants, no problem: Riders hop on light rail in their underwear

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Hundreds of people rode the light rail in Phoenix Sunday afternoon in their underwear!

It was a "no pants" light rail party.

From the waist up, it's just riders passing time on the light rail, but take a look south and it's a little less left up to the imagination.

"We are just doing something you don't expect to have happen. You don't expect to get on light rail on Sunday afternoon and suddenly everyone around you isn't wearing any pants," said Ruth Carter, event organizer.

The pants-less riders are hopping on public transit the same day as pants-less riders across the globe.

The movement: without a cause.

The wardrobe: without pants.

"We've gotten a lot of stares, snickers, we've had a lot of people take off their pants on the light rail that weren't a part of it and join in, which is always a blast," said
Joe Abbruscato.

But besides some people starring or ignoring the crowd, no one seemed to be getting their panty's in a bunch over it.

Some fully dressed passengers stopped to take pictures.

"we get a lot of questions of 'Why aren't you wearing any pants?' 'Is this a cause, is this a protest?' 'I don't get it' It's fabulous," said Carter.

But just try asking participants why they're not wearing pants. Most just dodge the question--and that's point--to act like nothing is unusual.

After the ride, it's bottoms up. The several hundred participants head to a bar for a drink.

"I think last year we had 350 and it was 42 degrees and this year's it's a lot more beautiful. We are expecting a lot more than that," said Carter.
