Back on the trail, Echo Canyon reopens to the public

Posted: Updated:

Echo Canyon trail is back open to hikers with one of the biggest changes, an expanded parking lot.

FOX 10 caught up with some of the first hikers to experience the new Echo Canyon trail at Camelback Mountain.

Hiker Matt Pine enjoyed the renovations, "pretty tough, more climbing than I thought... a pleasant experience."

"I think it's a fantastic workout... I think it's much safer for hikers" said Robert Keilty.

Park Ranger Shawn Peters described how they renovated the trail. "We took out the original railroad ties so it's less of a maintenance issue... less hikers will sprain their ankle hurting themselves and it's a more sustainable trail for the future."

Helpful for hikers too with added amenities people are happy about.

"Flushes toilets, drinking fountains, privacy stalls... they're great" said Ranger Peters.

New bathrooms and plenty of parking with nearly double the amount of parking spots and a new roundabout as well. The renovation also hopes to solve any issues mother nature may bring it's way.

It cost approximately $4 million to renovate the echo canyon trail. It's expected to be busy for a while so the City of Phoenix has banned dogs on the trail for the next six months.

"With the heavy rains we tried to get the water as much off the trail as possible so it doesn't rut and create a river down the trail" said Peters.

On the trail hikers so far at pleased with the changes. "I think anybody who comes out to the trail today and beyond will be very impressed" said Keilty.
