ELKHART, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two women who were shot dead by a gunman inside a supermarket in northern Indiana on Wednesday night have been identified.

Indiana State Police were called to "an active shooter situation" at a Martin's Super Market at 3900 E. Bristol St. in Elkhart about 10 p.m., Sgt. Trent Smith said at a press conference near the crime scene.

The gunman, 22-year-old Shawn W. Bair, walked into the store with a large semi-automatic handgun and shot a woman, before walking about 12 aisles down and shooting another woman on the other end of the store, ISP said in a statement.

The 20-year-old Martin's employee who was the first to be shot has been identified as Krystle Dikes of Elkhart, police said.

The 44-year-old woman shot has been identified as Rachelle Godfread, also of Elkhart, police said. Police believe Godfread was a patron of the store.

Both women were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

When police arrived, the shooter was pointing a gun at another employee, Smith said. He then pointed the gun at officers, who shot and killed him.

Bair, of Elkhart, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He had been armed with a large hunting knife and a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun.

The shooter's relationship to the victims was unclear.

Witnesses were being interviewed at the Elkhart police station.

Representatives for Martin's could not be reached for comment, but the company mentioned the incident Wednesday night in a post on its Facebook page.

"Thank you to our community for your thoughts and prayers tonight. We will comment further when we can do so responsibly and appropriately," the post said.
