CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man attempted to abduct a 10-year-old who was walking to school Monday morning in the Southwest Side Archer Heights neighborhood.

The attempted kidnapping happened about 8 a.m. Monday as the girl was walking in the 5100 block of South Kildare, an alert from Chicago Lawn District Police said.

A man in a silver or grey SUV or van, which was parked across the street, tried to lure the girl into his vehicle, first by gesturing with his hand and then by offering the child candy, according to police.

She refused the offer and ran until she was able to tell an adult she met what had happened, according to police.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set Hispanic man between 40 and 50 with a dark complexion, last seen wearing a grey knit winter hat, large prescription glasses, and a black coat.

Police are warning area residents not to let children walk or stand alone in the area, including bus stops and other public places, and to be alert for suspicious people or vehicles.

Anyone with information should call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380.
