Four charged with identity theft and student loan fraud

WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Four suburban residents were charged Friday with identity theft for stealing more than $100,000 in financial aid from the U.S. Department of Education by enrolling under false names at College of DuPage.

Dasia Blue, 28; and Lorin Brown, 35, both of Monee; and Olympia Blue, 32, and Jessie Wright, 26, both of Glendale Heights, used stolen identities to get student aid, according to a statement from the Attorney General's office.

All four are charged with identity theft over $100,000, theft over $100,000, continuing financial crimes enterprise, theft of government property over $10,000, mail fraud and wire fraud, the AG's office said.

Between January 2012 and February 2013, the four used stolen information to take out student loans totaling more than $100,000 while applying to take online classes at College of DuPage and University of Phoenix, prosecutors said.

Debit cards and checks in varying amounts, ranging from $7,000 to $13,000, were issued from the loans through U.S. Bank and Chase Bank, prosecutors said.

A search warrant executed in February 2013 at the Monee home of Brown and Dasia Blue recovered paper and computer records containing the identities of more than 50 people, prosecutors said. The College of DuPage lost about $30,000 in tuition because of their crimes.

In a Friday hearing before DuPage County Judge Kathryn Creswell, Brown and Wright pleaded not guilty, prosecutors said. They are scheduled to be back in court on March 4 and March 20, respectively.

Arrest warrants for Dasia Blue and Olympia Blue, who are not in custody, remain outstanding.

"The defendants conducted an extensive, coordinated scheme that involved the use of more than 50 stolen identities to obtain fraudulent funds," AG Lisa Madigan said in the statement. "This case reinforces how important it is to protect and carefully monitor your personal information to avoid falling victim to identity theft."
