Security on the minds of runners and P.F. Chang's race officials

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

The P.F. Chang's Rock and Roll marathon and half marathons are Sunday and with more than 20 thousand people expected to take part organizers are aware security may be a concern.

"A little nervous, definitely excited... looking forward to the energy of the race" said Christie Strack who will be running the half marathon Sunday.

For the past months runners of the P.F. Chang's Rock and Roll marathon have been preparing for this with some runners training for up to 20 miles a week.

On Sunday 24,000 runners will hit the pavement for 13.1 or 26.2 miles and while runners focus on the finish line a team of individuals will be focusing on everyone's safety.

P.F. Chang's marathon organizer Dan Cruz says there will be a big police and private security presence. "We have been in a deep dialog with local, state, federal, and homeland security officials about increasing security measures in advance of Sundays race".

"We want to make sure they are confident in the fact that they can go out there... they're going to run 13.1 or 26.2 miles and they're trusting us the organizer and local law enforcement to keep them safe" said Cruz.

For hardcore runners, like 80 year-old Mark Paper who has run every year for the past 11, he says nothing will stop them. "There's no risk no matter where you go so no, that wouldn't stop me and it wouldn't stop any of these people" said Paper.

Some of the security measures organizers are not talking about to keep everyone safe. They are telling everyone that sees anything out of the ordinary or anything they think is suspicious to tell a race official.
