MESA, Ariz. -

A man allegedly pointed a gun at officers when they came to his door looking for a hit-and-run suspect.

Mesa police say their officers went to a home near University Drive and Gilbert Road looking for a hit-and-run suspect on Saturday night. Two vehicles collided near Stapley and Southern and one of them took off.

When the homeowner, 51-year-old Robert Neilson, answered the door, the officers asked him if the suspect was there.

Neilson allegedly told the officers he was there, but then stepped back, takes a gun out of his waistband and points it at the officers saying, "Do you want this?"

Officers immediately grabbed the gun and were able to turn it away from themselves.

Police say they began to struggle, but an officer was able to finally get it away from Neilson.

Neilson was taken to the ground as he continued to struggle with officers.

Police say he reached for the handgun on the ground before officers took him into custody.

Neilson was taken to a hospital for treatment and his level of alcohol intoxication.

He was booked on two counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement and one count of resisting arrest.
