Netflix and celebrity fitness expert Harley Pasternak have teamed up for The Netflix Exercise Effect - the research-based notion that people who use entertainment, like Netflix, as a workout tool experience better fitness outcomes than those who listen to music or have no distraction. Every January, Americans eagerly jump on the fitness bandwagon, but too many people fall off. Netflix is the easy, sustainable and fun remedy for exercise boredom and fatigue. Scientific research proves consuming entertainment content, like Netflix, while working out has these benefits: lower dropout rates, longer periods of exercise, ability to stick with a fitness regimen, perceived exertion lower than actual exertion, voluntarily increased performance, and more (I can send you the research papers if desired). A great New Year's resolution is to pick up a show you've been waiting to watch and agree to only watch it while moving - such as Scandal, Orange is the New Black¸ etc.

Fun facts: You can burn off the donut and milk you ate for breakfast (approximately 300 calories) by watching just one sitcom while running on the treadmill at 5mph. If you cycled at a leisurely pace while streaming every episode of the "24" series (one episode a day for 6.5 months), you could lose up to 15 pounds.

1) He is a Canadian American personal trainer, motivational speaker, author and television host. Pasternak is known for his books The Body Reset Diet and The 5-Factor Diet, along with working with many celebrity clients as a personal trainer. Pasternak is known mainly to most audiences as one of the co-hosts of ABC's 2012 daytime talk show, The Revolution.

2) Pasternak graduated from York Mills Collegiate Institute, and holds an honors degree in kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario, and a masters degree in Exercise Physiology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto.

3) During his time at UT, Pasternak served as a Nutrition and Exercise Scientist at Department of National Defence's DCIEM (Defence and Civil Institute for Environmental Medicine) from 2005-2007. As a scientist, Harley focused on performance physiology and nutrition, with a specialty in caffeine and ephedrine. His work was published in the scientific journal, Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise in June, 2003, and in The Canadian Journal of Sports Medicine. Harley is also certified by the American College of Sports Medicine and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, and is an IDEA Master Trainer.
