New concussion center therapy machine tests and treats patients

3.8 million people suffer sports and recreational-related concussions every year, sometimes people don't even know they've suffered brain damage.

There is a new state-of-the-art machine in the valley only one of two in the country that is helping doctors pinpoint potential brain injuries.

The Banner Concussion Center has one of two of these machines used to treat concussions. They have only had it for a month but those who use it say it is changing the way they treat these brain injuries.

14-year-old Courtney not used to being on the sidelines of the volleyball court but that's where doctors want her at least for now.

"I've had three concussions" said Courtney. Those concussions leaving her in pain. "I get really bad headaches and if I get up too fast I get dizzy" said Courtney.

For the past few months she has been coming to Banner's Concussion Center for rehab.she is one of a handful of patients using this brand new state of the art machine.  In fact, this is only one of two currently in operation in the United States. The machine helps therapists pinpoint problem areas and then treat them.

"For me it's the most important piece of equipment I could ever use" said Shelly Massingale who is a physical therapist at Banner Concussion Center that specializes in balance. "It can look at how well you use your feet for balance how well you use sight and how well you use your inner ear" she said.

The machine gives the patients false visual cues then Measures how well your brain reacts to keep you balanced. Therapists are able to keep track of progress every session, for Courtney she is getting better every time and hopes to be back on the court soon.

"I've progressed so much and every time I do it, it gets easier" said Courtney.
