Boy, 11, girl, 12 suffer broken bones, stitches after pit bull attack

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Dozens of stitches, bite marks and broken bones but 11 year old Cipriano Carranza and his mother know it could have been far worse.

"I looked out and saw wrestling behind our fence and I heard him screaming for me. I ran out there as fast as I could and this is when I saw the dog was on his face," said Daisy Carranza.

Carranza's son was one of three attacked Wednesday night in this Austin neighborhood by a pit bull.

She showed us where the dog escaped - a backyard across this alley, visible from her kitchen window.

"The dog was biting his face, his arms, his ribs, his legs everything. I grabbed a hold of the dog from behind and got in her jaw and released her from my son," said Carranza.

That's when the dog ambushed 11 year old Latara Scott who was walking home with her aunt.

"He bit her here and he bit her here, he bit her teeth out her mouth and he bit her by the neck and right now she's still in the hospital," said Williemae Jackson, Latara's Aunt.

Police say the pit bull's owner was issued three citations for the dangerous dog bites, failing to license his pet and vaccinate for rabies.

"This dog could have killed our kids," said Jackson.

Pit bull advocacy group Even Chance says it's a myth that pit bulls are aggressive and attack more than any other breed but that's a hard sell for Williemae Jackson and Daisy Carranza.

"They had to shoot the dog five times to get him to stop. If my husband wasn't out there the dog would have killed the lady or her daughter if I wouldn't have saved my son, my son would have been dead," said Carranza.
