Movie Critic Matt Atchity: Catch Up On The Oscar Nominated Movies

Posted: Updated:

Matt Atchity says two of the year's best movies are hitting DVD and Blu Ray this week...and it looks like one of the year's worst is hitting theaters: I, Frankenstein.

"This is a movie that was not screened for critics and as I've said before...nobody hides a good movie...(As of Friday morning), we've got about 10 or 12 reviews...0%...I, Frankenstein...not really for anyone."

Matt says "Gimme Shelter" has good intentions but doesn't quite deliver the goods. It stars Vanessa Hudgens as a 16 year old who gets pregnant and ends up on the street.

"The movie really kind of does a disservice to the actors here, I think the movie kinda stays at one note which is kind of maudlin...it's not good unfortunately, the critics don't like it."

But Matt says there's hope for moviegoers this weekend, and her name is "Gloria". It's about an older woman who decides to try and stay young by hitting clubs and acting like a twentysomething. This is the one critics are going bananas over...if you're going out to the theaters this is probably your best bet."

If you're planning to stay home, you can catch a couple Academy Award nominees for Best Picture. Both "Blue Jasmine" and "Captain Phillips" are now on home video and Matt says the star of one of them will go home with an acting Oscar.

Matt Atchity is the editor in chief for the pop-culture website "Rotten Tomatoes." He also hosts a new show on Sirius XM called "Rotten Tomatoes Radio."

The weekly one hour call in show airs Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

‘Rotten Tomatoes TV Zone' is up now on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
